14-Count vs 18-Count Aida: Which is Better for Your Pattern?

Choosing the right Aida count affects how your finished cross stitch looks, how long it takes to complete, and how comfortable the stitching process feels. Here is a straightforward comparison of the two most popular options: 14-count and 18-count Aida.

What the Numbers Mean

The count refers to how many stitches fit per inch of fabric. 14-count Aida has 14 stitches per inch. 18-count Aida has 18 stitches per inch. Higher count means smaller stitches and more detail in the same physical space.

Size Difference

The same pattern stitched on different counts produces very different finished sizes:

  • A 100x100 stitch pattern on 14-count measures roughly 7.1 x 7.1 inches
  • The same pattern on 18-count measures roughly 5.6 x 5.6 inches

This matters for framing. If you want a larger finished piece without increasing the stitch count, 14-count gives you more size.

Detail Level

18-count shines when your pattern has fine details — facial features in a portrait, small text, or subtle color gradients. The smaller stitches produce a smoother, more refined look.

14-count works well for bold designs, geometric shapes, and patterns where individual stitches are part of the visual charm.

Ease of Stitching

14-count is significantly easier to stitch. The holes are larger and easier to see, the fabric is more forgiving, and you can work faster. This is why 14-count is the standard recommendation for beginners.

18-count requires more precision. The smaller holes demand better lighting, a thinner needle, and more careful counting. Many stitchers find it slower going, especially during long sessions.

Eye Strain Considerations

This is an important factor that many guides overlook:

  • 14-count is comfortable for most stitchers under normal lighting conditions
  • 18-count can cause eye fatigue, especially in dim lighting or during extended sessions
  • If you wear reading glasses or have vision concerns, 14-count is the safer choice
  • A magnifying lamp can make 18-count much more manageable

When to Use Each

Choose 14-count when:

  • You are a beginner learning the basics
  • The pattern is bold or graphic in style
  • You want a larger finished piece
  • You prefer faster, more relaxed stitching

Choose 18-count when:

  • The pattern has fine details or photo-realistic elements
  • You want a compact finished size
  • You have good lighting and comfortable vision
  • You are experienced and enjoy the precision
