Cross Stitch Count Guide: How Many Stitches Do You Need?
Cross Stitch Count Guide: How Many Stitches Do You Need?
Co-Founder & Design Lead
One of the first questions every cross stitcher asks about a new pattern is: how many stitches is this? The stitch count determines how long the project takes, how much thread you need, and how detailed the finished piece will be. Here is your complete guide to understanding and working with stitch counts.
Stitch Count vs. Pattern Size
Stitch count and finished size are related but not the same thing. A pattern that is 100 by 100 stitches will be different physical sizes depending on the fabric count:
- On 14-count Aida: approximately 7.1 by 7.1 inches
- On 16-count Aida: approximately 6.25 by 6.25 inches
- On 18-count Aida: approximately 5.6 by 5.6 inches
The higher the fabric count, the smaller each stitch, and the smaller the finished piece. This is why the same 10,000-stitch pattern can finish at very different sizes.
Calculating Total Stitches
Total stitch count is simply the width in stitches multiplied by the height in stitches for a fully filled pattern. In practice, most patterns are not fully filled — they have background areas and empty space.
- Small patterns: 1,000 to 5,000 stitches. Quick projects like bookmarks, coasters, and small motifs.
- Medium patterns: 5,000 to 25,000 stitches. Samplers, small portraits, and decorative pieces.
- Large patterns: 25,000 to 100,000 stitches. Detailed portraits, landscapes, and statement pieces.
- Epic patterns: 100,000+ stitches. Full-coverage designs that can take months or years to complete.
StitchCraft displays the exact stitch count for every pattern you create, broken down by color so you know exactly what you are committing to.
Time Estimates per Stitch Count
Everyone stitches at a different pace, but rough estimates help with planning:

- Beginner pace: about 15-20 stitches per minute, or roughly 1,000 stitches per hour
- Experienced pace: about 25-35 stitches per minute, or roughly 1,500-2,000 stitches per hour
Using these estimates:
- A 5,000-stitch pattern takes roughly 3-5 hours
- A 20,000-stitch pattern takes roughly 10-20 hours
- A 50,000-stitch pattern takes roughly 25-50 hours
- A 100,000-stitch pattern takes roughly 50-100 hours
These are stitching-time estimates only and do not include time for thread changes, counting, or breaks.
Choosing the Right Count for Your Skill Level
Beginners should start with lower stitch counts to build confidence and learn technique:
- First project: aim for 1,000-3,000 stitches with 5-10 colors
- Intermediate projects: 5,000-15,000 stitches with 10-20 colors
- Advanced projects: 20,000+ stitches with 20+ colors
The color count matters as much as the stitch count. A 10,000-stitch pattern with 5 colors is much more manageable than one with 40 colors, because fewer color changes means faster, smoother stitching.
Using StitchCraft to Manage Stitch Count
When creating a pattern in StitchCraft, you control the stitch count by adjusting the grid size. A larger grid means more stitches and more detail. A smaller grid means fewer stitches and a quicker project. The app shows you the stitch count in real time as you adjust, so you can find the perfect balance between detail and project size.
Download StitchCraft from the App Store to create patterns with the perfect stitch count for your next project.
