Text transforms a cross stitch project from a pretty picture into something deeply personal. Whether you are stitching a name, a quote, or a monogram, choosing the right alphabet pattern makes all the difference. Here is everything you need to know about adding text to your designs.

Choosing Fonts and Styles

Cross stitch alphabets come in many styles, and your choice should match the overall feel of your project:

  • Block letters are bold, easy to read, and work well for names and headings
  • Script and cursive fonts add elegance but require more stitches and careful counting
  • Serif fonts have a classic, traditional appearance ideal for samplers
  • Sans-serif fonts feel modern and clean, perfect for minimalist designs
  • Decorative fonts with flourishes or pixel-art styling add character to fun projects

Start with readability. A beautifully ornate font means nothing if the finished text is hard to read from a normal viewing distance.

Backstitch vs. Cross Stitch Letters

You have two main techniques for stitching letters:

  • Full cross stitch letters use standard X-shaped stitches to fill in each letter. They are bolder and more visible, especially in larger sizes.
  • Backstitch letters use single-line stitches to outline each letter. They are thinner, use less thread, and work well for small text or secondary details like dates and captions.

Many stitchers combine both — cross stitch for the main text and backstitch for smaller supporting text.

Getting the right text size is critical. Text that is too small becomes illegible, and text that is too large overwhelms the design.

  • On 14-count Aida, most readable fonts need letters at least 5-7 stitches tall
  • For prominent names or titles, aim for 10-15 stitches tall
  • Always stitch a test letter before committing to verify the size works

StitchCraft includes a text preview feature that lets you see exactly how your chosen font and size will look on the final pattern before you start stitching.

Combining Text with Images

When mixing text and imagery, balance is key:

  • Leave breathing room. Keep at least 3-5 stitches of empty space between text and image elements
  • Align carefully. Center text horizontally relative to the image for a polished look
  • Match the weight. Bold images pair well with bold fonts, while delicate images call for lighter text
