Cross Stitch Fabric Count Guide
Fabric count is one of the most important decisions in cross stitch, yet it's often overlooked. The fabric you choose determines the final size and detail level of your finished piece.
What Is Fabric Count?
Fabric count refers to the number of threads (or blocks) per inch of fabric. Common counts include:
- 11-count — Large stitches, beginner-friendly, fast to stitch
- 14-count — The most popular choice, good balance of size and detail
- 16-count — Slightly smaller stitches, more detail than 14-count
- 18-count — Small stitches, great for detailed patterns
- 28-count evenweave — Stitched over 2 threads, equivalent to 14-count but smoother
How Count Affects Finished Size
The same pattern will be dramatically different sizes on different fabrics. Here's a 100x100 stitch pattern as an example:
| Fabric Count | Finished Size | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count | 9.1 x 9.1 inches | Beginners, quick projects |
| 14-count | 7.1 x 7.1 inches | Most projects |
| 16-count | 6.25 x 6.25 inches | Medium detail |
| 18-count | 5.6 x 5.6 inches | Fine detail |
Choosing the Right Count
Consider these factors:
Your Pattern's Detail Level
Highly detailed photo conversions look better on higher counts where the smaller stitches create smoother gradients. Simple designs look great on lower counts.

Higher counts mean smaller holes and more precise work. If you find small stitches straining, go with 14 or even 11-count.
Desired Finished Size
Work backwards from your desired frame or display size. If you want a 5x7-inch finished piece from a 70x100 stitch pattern, you need 14-count fabric.
Your Experience Level
Beginners should start with 14-count Aida. It's forgiving, widely available, and works with standard 2-strand stitching.
Fabric Types
Aida cloth is the most common cross stitch fabric. It has a clear grid pattern that makes counting easy. Available in many counts and colors.
Evenweave (like Lugana) has a smoother texture and is stitched over 2 threads. 28-count evenweave is equivalent to 14-count Aida.
Linen offers a traditional look with slight irregularities that give the finished piece character. Also stitched over 2 threads.
Pro Tip: Use StitchCraft's Size Calculator
When creating a pattern in StitchCraft, the app shows you the finished dimensions for different fabric counts before you commit. This lets you experiment with grid size and fabric count combinations to hit your target size.
Choose your fabric count based on the look you want, the detail in your pattern, and your comfort level. When in doubt, 14-count Aida is always a solid choice.
