Cross Stitch Size Calculator: How to Calculate Your Finished Size

One of the most common frustrations in cross stitch is finishing a project only to discover it does not fit the frame you bought. Calculating your finished size before you start stitching takes just a few seconds and saves you from costly mistakes.

The Basic Formula

The formula for calculating finished cross stitch size is simple:

Stitch count / fabric count = finished size in inches

For example, a pattern that is 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida:

140 / 14 = 10 inches wide

That is it. Divide the number of stitches by the fabric count, and you get the finished dimension in inches.

Common Fabric Counts

Here are the most common fabric counts and what they mean for your finished size:

  • 11-count Aida — Each stitch is larger. A 100-stitch width = 9.1 inches.
  • 14-count Aida — The most popular. A 100-stitch width = 7.1 inches.
  • 16-count Aida — Slightly finer. A 100-stitch width = 6.25 inches.
  • 18-count Aida — Small, detailed stitches. A 100-stitch width = 5.6 inches.
  • 28-count evenweave over 2 — Same density as 14-count. A 100-stitch width = 7.1 inches.

Calculating Both Dimensions

Most patterns are not square, so calculate width and height separately.

For a pattern that is 120 stitches wide by 160 stitches tall on 14-count Aida:

  • Width: 120 / 14 = 8.6 inches
  • Height: 160 / 14 = 11.4 inches

Your finished design area is approximately 8.6 by 11.4 inches.

Adding Margin Allowance

You need extra fabric around the edges for framing and handling. The standard allowance is:

  • Add 3 inches on each side for a total of 6 extra inches per dimension
  • For the example above: 8.6 + 6 = 14.6 inches wide, 11.4 + 6 = 17.4 inches tall
  • Cut your fabric to at least 15 x 18 inches to be safe
  • Larger projects may benefit from 4 inches on each side for easier framing

Quick Reference Examples

Here are some common pattern sizes and their finished dimensions on 14-count Aida:

  • 60x80 stitches = 4.3 x 5.7 inches (fits a 5x7 frame with matting)
  • 80x100 stitches = 5.7 x 7.1 inches (fits a standard frame)
  • 100x140 stitches = 7.1 x 10 inches (fits an 8x10 frame)
  • 140x180 stitches = 10 x 12.9 inches (fits an 11x14 frame)

StitchCraft's Auto-Calculation

StitchCraft eliminates the guesswork by automatically calculating your finished size based on your grid dimensions and selected fabric count. When you create or adjust a pattern, the app displays:

  • Finished width and height in inches and centimeters
  • Recommended fabric cut size including margin allowance
  • Size comparison across different fabric counts so you can pick the one that fits your frame

This means you never have to do the math yourself — just select your fabric count and StitchCraft shows you exactly how large your piece will be.

Tips for Accurate Sizing

  • Measure your frame opening before choosing a pattern size — account for matting if you plan to use it
  • Round up when cutting fabric — extra fabric is easy to trim, but you cannot add more
  • Wash and iron your fabric before starting, as some shrinkage can occur
  • Double-check your count by counting 10 holes per inch on your fabric to verify it matches the labeled count
